Sterling’s eyes, the color of a winter sky just before a blizzard, narrowed as he watched the flickering image on his tablet. General Thorne’s pronouncements were, as always, cloaked in the serene confidence of a man who believed himself untouchable. But Thorne was wrong. The General’s meticulous plan, a masterpiece of calculated erasure and strategic silence, was fraying at the edges like a cheap suit. Vance was stirring. Not just stirring, but *waking*. And Chloe Ashton, the inconvenient, unforgettable variable, was the catalyst.

He’d followed her arrival on base with the detached efficiency of a predator observing its prey. Her controlled movements, the practiced neutrality of her expression – he’d recognized it instantly. The same kind of armor he himself wore, but hers was forged in a different fire. The fire of abandonment. Thorne had underestimated the power of that fire, the way it could reignite a dormant spark. Thorne wanted Vance’s memories buried, a convenient void to protect a larger, more dangerous truth. Sterling understood that.
