Chloe traced the condensation on her water glass, the chill seeping into her fingertips a familiar comfort. Outside the mess hall, the late afternoon sun cast long, distorted shadows across the manicured lawns of Fort Sterling. Inside, the cacophony of clanking trays and boisterous conversations felt like a distant hum, a soundtrack to her own internal stillness. She watched Charles across the room, his broad shoulders a solid presence as he laughed with a group of officers. He looked so… complete. So unaware of the gaping void where their shared history used to reside. It was a constant ache, a phantom limb of memory that refused to fade.

Five years. Five years of building walls, brick by painstaking brick, only to have them crumble at the prospect of this arranged marriage. Her father’s quiet plea, her mother’s tearful one, the unspoken threat to the family’s reputation if she refused – it had all coalesced into an inescapable obligation. And so, here she was, a reluctant bride-to-be, sharing a mess hall with the man who had vanished like smoke, leaving behind only the ashes of her youthful heart.

She’d prepared for this. She’d rehearsed her lines, practiced her stoicism. She would be polite, distant, and utterly functional. No displays of emotion, no hints of the raw wound beneath the surface. She would fulfill her duty, and when this marriage inevitably dissolved, she would walk away without a single tear shed in public.
