The sterile white walls of the officer’s quarters were a stark contrast to the sun-drenched, memory-laden rooms Chloe had once inhabited with Charles. Now, each corner of this meticulously organized space felt like a taunt, a silent accusation of the life they were supposed to have built, a life that had evaporated into thin air five years prior. She traced the rim of her coffee mug, the ceramic cool against her fingertips.
