The air in Elias’s cramped apartment always seemed to hold the lingering scent of exhaust fumes and desperation, a perfume he’d grown accustomed to. Tonight, however, it was tinged with something else, something he couldn't quite place. A faint, metallic tang, like old blood or ozone after a storm. He’d spent the day replaying the previous night’s delivery, the one that had yielded the cryptic note. Each word, each smudged ink stroke, felt like a thread pulled taut, threatening to unravel the fragile normalcy he clung to.

He unfolded the crumpled paper again, the fluorescent light of his desk lamp casting a sickly yellow glow. "The Serpent's Eye watches. The Whispering Stone sleeps. Seek the forgotten king. Midnight’s price is paid in silence." The words were a riddle wrapped in an enigma, delivered with the casual indifference of a dropped flyer. But Elias knew, with a certainty that chilled him to the bone, that this was no ordinary flyer. The courier who’d handed it to him, a man whose face Elias couldn’t even recall, had seemed like any other night-shift phantom, but the briefest flicker in his eyes, a tremor in his hand as he’d passed the package, had snagged Elias’s attention.

He traced the edges of the paper, his mind a restless sea. The Serpent’s Eye. The Whispering Stone. Forgotten king. He’d heard whispers of such things in the hushed corners of the city, tales spun by old men with rheumy eyes and too much time on their hands. Legends of artifacts imbued with strange powers, of secret societies that guarded them, of a history that ran deeper and darker than the city’s paved streets. He’d always dismissed them as fanciful nonsense, the product of too much cheap liquor and too little sleep. But now, the note felt like a key, a misplaced piece of a puzzle he hadn’t even known existed.
