The city, a beast of concrete and steel, exhaled its first, tentative breath of dawn. Hues of bruised purple and hesitant rose bled into the sky, chasing away the inky cloak that had held Elias captive for so many nights. He stood on a rooftop, the wind a cold caress against his sweat-slicked skin, the metallic tang of adrenaline still sharp on his tongue. Below, the city stirred, oblivious to the silent war that had raged in its hidden arteries.

Vance’s goons, accustomed to the predictable routes of the privileged, had been a step behind, their heavy boots echoing in the empty spaces where Elias had already vanished. The broadcast, initiated from a secure network Lena had provided, had been audacious, a digital scream into the void. It hadn't exposed everything, not by a long shot. Vance was too cunning for that. But it had prised open a crack, revealing a sliver of the rot that festered beneath the city’s gleaming facade.
