Chapter 8
Shadows and Whispers
The war's presence is a constant threat, its shadows lengthening. Elara hears whispers of fear, but the old woman's calm voice reassures her.
The air itself seemed to crackle with a nervous energy, a constant hum of unease that vibrated deep in Elara’s bones. The war, a monstrous beast with a thousand hungry mouths, was never far away. Its breath was the distant rumble of cannons, its growl the sharp crack of gunfire, and its shadow, a vast, suffocating blanket that stretched across the land, swallowing the sunlight and chilling the very marrow of her being. Her face, a roadmap of a life lived through countless seasons, was a landscape of quiet strength, her eyes, though clouded with age, held a depth that Elara found both unsettling and comforting.
“They say the war is a hungry thing,” Elara whispered, her voice barely a breath against the persistent sigh of the wind. She clutched her worn toy soldier, its painted uniform chipped and faded, a silent sentinel in her small, trembling hand. “It eats everything.”
