The air, thick with the acrid tang of smoke and the metallic scent of something Elara couldn't quite name, pressed in on her. Each breath was a shallow, desperate gulp. The old woman’s words, a whisper like dry leaves skittering across stone, still echoed in the spaces between the thunderous roars that shook the very ground. "Follow the shimmer, little one. Where the light bends, the path will bloom." Elara clutched the small, smooth stone the woman had pressed into her palm. It felt strangely warm, a tiny ember against her skin.

She’d watched the old woman melt back into the swirling grey mist as if she were made of it, leaving Elara alone once more, but this time, not entirely. There was the stone, and the memory of those knowing eyes, a deep, ancient blue that seemed to hold secrets older than the hills. And there was the path. Or rather, the *promise* of a path.

Around her, the world was a jagged tapestry of broken things. Twisted metal, splintered wood, and the ghostly outlines of buildings that had once stood proud. The sounds of destruction were a relentless symphony – the distant, guttural growl of engines, the sharp crack of unseen forces, and the mournful sigh of the wind through shattered windows. Elara’s small feet, clad in worn leather boots, were hesitant at first. Where was this shimmer? How could a path bloom in such a desolation?
