Elara huddled deeper into the tattered shawl the old woman had draped around her shoulders. The rough wool scratched at her chin, but it was a welcome sensation, a grounding touch in the swirling chaos that had become her world. The old woman’s voice, a melody woven from moonbeams and forgotten lullabies, floated around her, a stark contrast to the guttural roars and sharp cracks that had become the soundtrack to her days.

“Dreams, little one,” the old woman murmured, her fingers, gnarled as ancient roots, stroking Elara’s hair. “They are the stardust of the soul, you see. They’re what we carry when all else is stripped away.”

She spoke of sun-drenched meadows where children chased butterflies, of hearths crackling with warmth, of laughter that bubbled up like a clear spring. These were images Elara recognized, not from her own fleeting memories, but from the hushed stories her father used to tell. He’d spoken of a time when the sky was blue, not choked with smoke, and when the loudest noise was the chirping of birds, not the thunder of distant guns.
