The deafening roar, a beast that had haunted Elara’s every waking moment and seeped into her sleep, began to recede. It was like a tide pulling away, leaving behind a strange, unsettling quiet. The ground, once a trembling, uncertain floor beneath her small feet, now felt solid, still. Elara took a tentative step forward, her worn leather boots crunching softly on fallen leaves. She looked back, half expecting to see the fiery maw of destruction still gaping behind her, but there was only more forest, dense and inviting. The war, it seemed, had finally released its grip. A tremor ran through her, not of fear, but of a profound, dizzying relief. Her small chest, so long constricted by terror, finally felt able to expand, to draw in deep, cleansing breaths.
