The Courage Within

The air still vibrated with the ghost of explosions, a low thrumming that settled in Elara’s bones like a persistent chill. Dust motes danced in the slivers of weak sunlight that pierced the jagged holes in what had once been a roof. Every shadow seemed to hold a threat, every creak of splintered wood a hungry whisper. Elara’s small hand tightened around the worn fabric of her dress, her knuckles white. Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic bird trapped in a cage. She was small, so very small, and the world around her was vast and broken.

She had been running, stumbling, her little legs pumping with a desperate energy she didn’t know she possessed. The sounds of the war, a monstrous symphony of screams and roars, had faded to a dull, menacing hum, but the fear remained, a cold, clinging vine. She had lost her way, utterly and completely. The familiar paths of her village, the comforting scent of her mother’s baking, the warmth of her father’s hand – all were gone, swallowed by the hungry maw of the conflict. Now, there was only this desolate landscape, a graveyard of shattered buildings and uprooted trees, and the gnawing ache of loneliness.

A particularly loud gust of wind, carrying the scent of damp earth and something sharp, like burnt metal, rattled a loose pane of glass nearby. Elara flinched, pressing herself against the cold, rough brick wall. Her breath hitched, a tiny, choked sound that seemed to echo in the silence that followed. She squeezed her eyes shut, picturing the little wooden soldier her father had given her. Its painted uniform was chipped, its one remaining arm held stiffly at its side, but it was a symbol of bravery, of a time before the world had turned so terribly wrong. She wished, with all the might of her small being, that she could be as brave as him.
