Barnaby Buttercup, a man whose optimism was as boundless as his ability to trip over air, found himself face-down in Mrs. Higgins’ prize-winning petunias. The scent of crushed blooms, usually a gentle perfume, now mingled with the acrid tang of defeat and a faint, yet familiar, yeasty aroma. He’d been so sure the mayor’s meticulously manicured rose bushes held the key to his starter’s disappearance. He’d been wrong. Spectacularly wrong. Again.

“Oh, bother,” he mumbled, his voice muffled by a cushion of velvety red petals. He pushed himself up, a faint dusting of pollen clinging to his already flour-dusted apron. His quest, a whirlwind of misinterpretations and escalating absurdity, had led him from the formidable feline fortress of Mrs. Higgins to the hushed, dusty aisles of the library, and finally, to the pompous pronouncements of Mayor Mildew. Each encounter had been a masterclass in his own befuddlement, a symphony of well-intentioned blunders.

He’d accused Mrs. Higgins of harboring his starter, mistaking her collection of porcelain cats for a clandestine fermentation operation. Her response, a volley of indignant meows from her actual, very furry, felines, had been less than helpful. Then there was the librarian, Miss Periwinkle, whose hushed reverence for silence Barnaby had misinterpreted as a sign of secretive starter-hoarding. He’d imagined her, in the dead of night, carefully tending to his bubbly creation amongst the Dewey Decimal system. She’d merely offered him a pamphlet on ‘The Art of Quiet Contemplation,’ which he’d promptly mistaken for a coded message about starter maintenance. And Mayor Mildew, bless his well-meaning, but utterly clueless, heart. Barnaby had cornered him by the village pond, convinced the mayor’s fervent pronouncements about ‘community growth’ were a thinly veiled confession. The mayor, it turned out, was merely discussing the new allotment program.
