A Trail of Floury Footprints
Following a faint trail of flour, Barnaby stumbles through the village, each step leading him further from the truth and closer to absurdity.
Barnaby Buttercup, his brow furrowed in a most un-Buttercup-like manner, stood in his usually immaculate kitchen, now a scene of what could only be described as a culinary crime scene. Flour, his most trusted ally, was scattered with reckless abandon, like a blizzard had decided to hold a rave in his pantry. And the centerpiece of this chaos? An empty ceramic crock, where Bartholomew, his beloved sourdough starter, should have been, bubbling with anticipatory glee. Bartholomew, a starter so prized it had its own tiny, custom-made humidifier and a lullaby Barnaby hummed to it nightly, was gone. Vanished. Evaporated.
“Bartholomew!” Barnaby wailed, his voice cracking like a day-old baguette. The Great Village Bake-Off was this very afternoon. His reputation, built on a foundation of perfectly risen loaves and impossibly flaky pastries, was teetering like a poorly stacked cake. And the grand prize, a year’s supply of artisanal cheese that made his salivary glands do a jig, was now a distant, cheesy dream.
He clutched his apron, the one embroidered with cheerful little rolling pins, as if it were a life raft. A misplaced sense of confidence, a trait as ingrained in Barnaby as the yeast in Bartholomew, began to resurface. “Right,” he muttered, puffing out his chest. “This is merely a minor setback. A… pre-bake adventure!”
