The Great Village Bake-Off, the annual event that separated the mere bakers from the legendary, was mere hours away. His reputation, a delicate edifice built on perfectly risen loaves and the occasional spectacular cake disaster, teetered precariously. And then there was the artisanal cheese. A year's supply of the stuff, a reward so tantalizing it had been the sole motivation for Barnaby's rigorous sourdough regimen.
His quest, fueled by a potent blend of desperation and misplaced confidence, had already led him through the labyrinthine alleys of suspicion, past the perpetually scowling Mrs. Higgins and her legion of feline overlords, and now, it led him to the polished oak doors of the Mayor’s office. Mayor Pumble, a man whose jowls seemed to possess a gravitational pull of their own, was the last bastion of potential larceny, or so Barnaby’s increasingly frantic mind concluded.
He burst through the doors with the subtlety of a runaway flour sack, nearly tripping over a well-meaning potted fern. “Mayor Pumble!” he declared, his voice a little too loud, a little too high. “I need your help! Bartholomew is gone!”
