Morning Laughter Lingers

The last rays of the setting sun painted the village of Little Puddleton in hues of apricot and rose, a gentle farewell to a day that had been, to put it mildly, a bit of a whirlwind. Barnaby Buttercup, still dusted with a fine layer of flour that seemed to have taken up permanent residence on his person, sat on his porch swing, a half-eaten slice of his own “Hedgehog Surprise” cake resting on the small table beside him. The cake, a riot of oddly-shaped sponge and suspiciously green frosting, was a testament to the morning’s utterly bizarre events.

He’d expected to be basking in the glow of a potential Bake-Off victory, or at least the comforting aroma of his perfectly proven sourdough. Instead, he’d found himself in a frantic scavenger hunt for a jar of goo, a hunt that had led him through a gauntlet of bewildered villagers and ended with a hedgehog family enjoying a rather elaborate foot spa.

A soft sigh escaped Barnaby’s lips, a sound that was more contentment than complaint. He’d chased his starter with the fervor of a bloodhound, albeit a rather clumsy one, and the resulting chaos had been, well, magnificently chaotic. He’d accused Mrs. Higgins of cat-napping his starter, only to find her felines engaged in a synchronized nap that was frankly awe-inspiring. He’d interrogated Mr. Abernathy, the librarian, who’d responded with a series of perfectly punctuated shushes that had somehow conveyed a universe of innocent bewilderment. And then there was Mayor Mildred, whose initial bluster about civic duty and public nuisance had dissolved into sputtering laughter when Barnaby, in his desperation, had tried to explain the concept of a sentient sourdough starter.
