The Story Unfolds

Barnaby, with a sheepish grin, recounts the tale of his vanished starter and the hedgehog spa. Laughter ripples through the crowd.

The village green was a sea of expectant faces, a hushed anticipation hanging in the air thicker than the scent of burnt sugar from Mrs. Higgins’ disastrous meringues. Barnaby Buttercup, his apron still dusted with a faint shimmer of flour from his unconventional bake, stood before them, a sheepish grin stretching across his face. He cleared his throat, the sound swallowed by the expectant silence. “Well,” he began, his voice a little shaky, “it seems… it seems I owe you all an explanation.”

A ripple of murmurs went through the crowd. Mayor Mildred, her usually stern expression softened by a curious glint, leaned forward. “We’re all ears, Barnaby. And frankly, that… creation of yours has certainly piqued our interest.” She gestured vaguely towards the remains of the ‘Hedgehog Surprise,’ a confection that looked less like a cake and more like a particularly enthusiastic hedgehog had gone through a paint factory.

Barnaby took a deep breath, the scent of damp earth and… well, hedgehog, still clinging faintly to his apron. “It all started this morning,” he announced, his voice gaining a touch more confidence as he recalled the sheer, unadulterated chaos. “I woke up, as one does, ready to embrace the glorious day, and more importantly, to give my prize-winning sourdough starter, Bartholomew, his morning embrace. Bartholomew, you see, is not just any starter. He’s… he’s practically family. He’s the secret ingredient to my award-winning loaves, the reason I’ve won this bake-off for the past three years running.” He paused, a dramatic flourish he’d picked up from watching too many cooking shows. “And he was gone. Vanished. Poof!”
