A Taste of True Surprise
Hesitantly, the judges take a bite. Their expressions shift from confusion to delight as they savor the unexpectedly delicious flavor.
The air in the village hall was thick with the scent of butter, sugar, and a nervous anticipation that could curdle milk at twenty paces. Barnaby Buttercup, his apron dusted with what he hoped was just a bit of flour and not, say, a rogue bit of hedgehog fur, stood before the judges’ table. His “Hedgehog Surprise” cake, a magnificent, if lopsided, creation adorned with marzipan hedgehogs nestled in ‘grass’ made of piped green icing, seemed to stare back at him with its sugary, unblinking eyes.
The judges, a trio of formidable individuals whose culinary reputations preceded them like a thunderclap, regarded the cake with expressions that ranged from mild skepticism to outright bewilderment. There was Mrs. Gable, whose own Victoria sponge had won the Bake-Off for three consecutive years, and whose frown could wilt a rose. Beside her sat Mr. Finch, the retired grocer, a man whose palate was as refined as his collection of antique tea cozies. And then there was Father Michael, the village vicar, whose baking prowess was legendary, particularly his fruitcakes that could double as doorstops.
“So,” Mrs. Gable began, her voice like rustling parchment, “this is… the ‘Hedgehog Surprise’?” She pronounced the name as if it were a particularly unpleasant fungal infection.
