Judges' Jaws Drop
The judges eye Barnaby's cake with bewilderment. Its lumpy, textured appearance is unlike anything they've ever seen.
The air in the village hall crackled with an anticipatory hush, thick enough to butter toast. Sunlight, dappled and theatrical, sliced through the high windows, illuminating floating dust motes that danced like tiny, excited sugar sprinkles. This was it. The grand finale of the Great Village Bake-Off. Barnaby Buttercup, his apron dusted with more imagination than flour, stood beside his creation, a magnificent, albeit peculiar, monument to chaotic inspiration: the Hedgehog Surprise.
He’d spent the morning in a whirlwind of nervous energy, a frantic ballet of whisking, folding, and an alarming amount of accidental tasting. The hedgehog-shaped cake, adorned with meticulously sculpted marzipan spines (each one lovingly, if somewhat unevenly, applied), sat regally on a doily that had seen better days, probably during the Victorian era. Its base, a rich, dark chocolate, was offset by a vibrant, almost neon, green frosting, a daring choice that had sent Mrs. Higgins, his usually unflappable baking rival, into a fit of theatrical gasps.
“It’s… bold, Barnaby,” Mrs. Higgins had murmured, her own perfectly symmetrical Victoria sponge looking positively pedestrian in comparison. Her eyes, however, held a flicker of something akin to horrified fascination.
