Chapter 12
Bake-Off Bedlam Begins
The village green buzzes with activity. Competitors display their perfect pastries, while Barnaby nervously presents his quirky creation.
The village green, usually a placid expanse of emerald turf dotted with the occasional napping dog or giggling child, had transformed into a veritable culinary coliseum. Banners, emblazoned with slightly wonky depictions of smiling cupcakes and proud loaves, flapped in the gentle breeze, announcing the arrival of the annual Great Village Bake-Off. The air, thick with anticipation, was also a heady perfume of sugar, spice, and, in Barnaby’s case, a faint undercurrent of hedgehog-infused desperation.
Competitors, a motley crew of bakers whose earnestness was only rivaled by their competitive spirit, bustled about. Mrs. Higgins, a woman whose posture suggested she’d once wrestled a badger for a scone and won, meticulously arranged a dozen perfectly uniform lemon drizzles, each one gleaming under the midday sun like a tiny, edible sun. Young Timmy Perkins, whose ambition far outstripped his dexterity, proudly displayed a towering monstrosity of a Victoria sponge, precariously balanced and threatening to topple with every passing gust. And then there was Barnaby Buttercup, standing beside his own entry with the nervous energy of a rabbit in a lettuce patch.
His creation, a magnificent, multi-tiered marvel, was unlike anything the village had ever seen. It was, as the hastily scribbled sign proclaimed, the “Hedgehog Surprise.” The bottom tier was a rich, dark chocolate ganache, swirling with patterns reminiscent of a hedgehog’s quills. The middle tier was a vibrant green matcha sponge, dyed to mimic mossy earth. And perched precariously atop it all was a delicate sugar-paste hedgehog, complete with tiny, glistening blackcurrant eyes, gazing out with an air of bewildered innocence. It was… bold. It was… unconventional. It was, Barnaby fervently hoped, delicious.
