Chapter 11
The Birth of the Hedgehog Surprise
Inspired by his prickly friends, Barnaby begins baking. The 'Hedgehog Surprise' cake takes shape, a testament to his unconventional journey.
Barnaby Buttercup, bless his flour-dusted heart, was a baker of the most optimistic disposition. His smile could melt butter faster than a summer sun, and his belief in the inherent goodness of dough was as unwavering as the village spire. Yet, beneath that sunny exterior, lurked a clumsiness so profound, so magnificent, it could bring down a small oak tree with a misplaced sneeze. Today, however, Barnaby’s usual cheerful disposition was a tad… flustered. The Great Village Bake-Off was mere hours away, and his prize-winning, bubbling, gloriously pungent sourdough starter, affectionately named Bartholomew, had vanished. Poof. Gone. Like a whisper in a hurricane.
His quest, as we’ve seen, had been a whirlwind of misinterpretations and escalating comedic mishaps. He’d interrogated Mrs. Higgins, the village’s resident cat whisperer, whose only response had been a series of disdainful meows from her ten feline companions, each more judgmental than the last. He’d tiptoed through the hallowed, silent halls of the library, convinced the suspiciously quiet librarian, Mr. Abernathy, was hoarding Bartholomew in a secret compartment behind the Dewey Decimal System. And then there was Mayor Grimble, whose pronouncements about village cleanliness were usually as clear as mud after a particularly vigorous rainstorm, and who had, in Barnaby’s increasingly desperate mind, somehow orchestrated the starter’s disappearance to uphold some obscure bylaw about ‘unattended bubbling matter.’
But then, as the despair threatened to engulf his usually buoyant spirit, a most peculiar sight had unfolded before him. He’d tripped, as was his wont, over a particularly garish garden gnome, and landed, rather unceremoniously, in a patch of overgrown lavender. And there, nestled amongst the fragrant purple stalks, was Bartholomew. Not kidnapped, not stolen, but… being used. By a family of hedgehogs. A family of hedgehogs who were, quite frankly, having the time of their lives.
