A Recipe for Absurdity
Barnaby retrieves his starter, now infused with a unique, earthy aroma. He decides to embrace the chaos and create something entirely new.
Barnaby Buttercup, his apron still dusted with the phantom flour of a thousand imagined triumphs, knelt beside the hedgehog haven. The scene was, to put it mildly, a masterpiece of unintended tranquility. A small, earthenware pot, usually home to the pulsating heart of his sourdough ambitions, was now occupied by a quartet of plump, rust-colored hedgehogs. They were, to Barnaby’s bewildered eyes, using his precious starter as a rather elaborate foot spa. Tiny, prickled feet dipped and wiggled contentedly in the bubbly, yeasty concoction, a scene so utterly bizarre it bordered on the sublime.
The aroma that wafted from the pot was… different. Gone was the familiar, sharp tang of pure sourdough. Now, there was an undercurrent of damp earth, a whisper of wild mushroom, and something akin to very happy, slightly damp fur. It was, Barnaby admitted, a fragrance quite unlike anything he’d encountered in his decades of baking.
He stared, mouth agape, at the miniature spa patrons. They blinked at him with beady, unconcerned eyes, as if his presence was merely an interruption to their daily ablutions. One particularly portly hedgehog, its spines glistening with starter, let out a contented snuffle.
