Chapter 8
Jasmine's Game
Jasmine, the street-smart associate who offered them refuge and advice, reveals her true colors. What seemed like genuine help was a calculated performance. Maya and Caleb, initially grateful for her assistance, begin to notice inconsistencies, hushed phone calls, and furtive meetings. They uncover her deceitful role: she's been feeding information directly to Silas Thorne, playing a dangerous game for her own survival and profit. Her betrayal cuts deep, not just because it jeopardizes their freedom, but because it highlights the pervasive treachery of their world. Jasmine's double-dealing escalates the stakes exponentially.
The air in Jasmine’s cramped shotgun house hung thick and heavy, not just with the cloying scent of stale cigarettes and cheap air freshener, but with a new, unsettling tension. Maya, usually the first to pick up on the vibe, felt it like a physical pressure against her skin. She’d been trying to shake off the lingering fear from the botched deal, the gnawing anxiety of Sheriff Brody’s relentless pursuit, and Caleb’s quiet worry that clung to him like swamp mist. Jasmine, with her sharp eyes and even sharper tongue, had been their supposed sanctuary, a haven in the storm. She’d offered them a place to lay low, a sympathetic ear, and a steady stream of "advice" that, at the time, had felt like lifelines.
"You sure about this, Maya?" Caleb’s voice, low and rough, rumbled beside her as they watched Jasmine from the doorway of the tiny kitchen. She was out on the porch, a cigarette dangling from her lips, her back to them as she spoke into a phone, her voice a low murmur that Maya’s ears, finely tuned to the whispers of their dangerous world, strained to catch.
Maya shrugged, a gesture that felt too casual for the knot tightening in her stomach. "What choice do we have, Cal? Brody’s sniffing around like a bloodhound, and Silas… well, Silas ain't exactly sending us Christmas cards." She ran a hand through her already messy dark hair. "Jasmine’s got connections. She said she knows a guy who can get us across the border, clean plates, the whole nine yards."
