Chapter 6
Whispers of Betrayal
The foundation of their trust crumbles when a betrayal, sharp and unexpected, strikes from within their small circle of confidantes. A deal gone wrong, a tip-off to the wrong person, a hidden agenda revealed – the source of their current predicament is laid bare. The harsh reality of their choices, the true cost of their thrill-seeking, hits Maya and Caleb with devastating force. They realize their precarious freedom is built on shifting sands, and survival now hinges on a drastic, life-altering decision. The paranoia intensifies; who can they possibly trust when the venom comes from someone they once called friend?

“Jasmine,” Maya finally said, the name a bitter taste in her mouth. “It had to be her.”
Caleb grunted, a sound devoid of any humor. “Who else? We told nobody about that rendezvous point. Nobody but Jasmine.” He ran a hand over his face, the rasp of his stubble a familiar comfort that felt alien now. “And that damn Sheriff Brody. He was too damn close, Maya. Too damn ready.”
