The air tasted like spent gunpowder and regret. Maya tasted it on her tongue, a metallic tang that clung even after the last echo of sirens had finally surrendered to the oppressive Mississippi quiet. She coughed, a dry, rasping sound that felt alien in the sudden stillness. Beside her, Caleb stirred, a low groan escaping his lips. His arm, still draped across her waist, felt heavy, a comforting anchor in the swirling chaos that had finally, blessedly, ceased.
They were in the back of a beat-up pickup truck, the kind that looked like it had wrestled a badger and lost. Burlap sacks, smelling faintly of fertilizer and something vaguely fishy, were piled around them, offering a surprising if scratchy sort of camouflage. How they’d ended up here, crammed between sacks of… whatever these were, was a blur of adrenaline, shouting, and the terrifyingly precise crack of gunfire. One moment they were making a break for it, the next, a tire blew, sending them skidding into a ditch, and then… then it was a whirlwind of flashing lights, flashing badges, and Silas Thorne’s goons looking decidedly less serpentine and more like cornered rats.
“You okay?” Caleb’s voice was a rough whisper, laced with exhaustion. He shifted, wincing, and Maya felt a jolt of panic.
