Detective Miles Corbin leaned forward, his gaze locked onto the man seated opposite him. This wasn't just another suspect; this was a knot in the unraveling thread, a loose end that threatened to unravel everything. Elias Thorne, a man whose life had been a quiet, almost invisible existence, now sat under the harsh glare of the gaslight, his hands clasped tightly before him. Corbin had spent the better part of the morning meticulously dissecting Thorne’s alibi, the flimsy fabric of his story fraying with each probing question. Thorne’s answers were clipped, evasive, a series of mumbled denials that offered no comfort, no clarity.

“Mr. Thorne,” Corbin’s voice was a low rumble, carefully controlled, “we’ve been over this. You claim you were home, alone, on the night Mr. Abernathy met his end. Is that correct?”

Thorne shifted, his eyes darting to the side, avoiding Corbin’s direct stare. “Yes, Detective. I was home. Reading.”
