The air in Lola’s small apartment hummed with a different kind of energy now. It wasn’t just the nervous flutter in her stomach, or the ever-growing swell of her belly, but a palpable shift in the atmosphere. Alex and Ben were here, together, in her space, and for the first time, it felt less like a precarious balancing act and more like… a beginning.
They had arrived with a shared mission. Ben, ever the enthusiast, had brought a brightly colored mobile, its felt stars and moons promising sweet dreams. Alex, quieter but no less invested, had a meticulously researched list of baby gear, his brow furrowed in concentration as he pointed out the merits of different stroller models. Lola watched them, a lump forming in her throat, a complex knot of hope and bewilderment.
“So, this one,” Ben said, holding up a plush elephant with a ridiculously long trunk, “is apparently designed to emit soothing white noise. Essential, apparently, for those… *moments*.” He winked at Lola, his usual easy charm present, but now tempered with a new layer of tenderness.
