Building Bridges
Alex and Ben begin to communicate, sharing their fears and hopes. They start to see each other not as rivals, but as future co-parents united by Lola and their children.
The air in Lola’s small living room hummed with a nervous energy, thick and palpable like the summer heat outside. Alex sat on the worn armchair, his usual composed demeanor frayed at the edges, while Ben perched on the edge of the sofa, bouncing one knee with an almost frantic rhythm. Lola watched them, her heart a hummingbird trapped in her chest. This was it. The precipice. The moment where the unspoken fears and tentative hopes would finally be laid bare.
“So,” Ben began, his voice a little too loud, a little too bright, as if to fill the void of their shared apprehension. He offered Lola a shaky smile. “Here we are.”
Alex shifted, his gaze meeting Ben’s across the coffee table. There was no animosity there, not anymore. Just a shared bewilderment, a dawning understanding that their individual worlds had irrevocably collided, and instead of imploding, they were being forced to find a new kind of gravity. “Yeah,” Alex said, his voice softer, more measured. “Here we are.”
