The air in Lola's living room felt thick, charged with an unspoken mixture of apprehension and a fragile hope. Sunlight, usually a cheerful visitor, seemed to filter through the blinds with a hesitant grace, casting striped shadows across the worn rug. Lola sat on the sofa, her hands clasped tightly in her lap, her gaze shifting between Alex and Ben. They occupied the armchairs opposite her, their familiar, comforting presences now imbued with a new, shared gravity. This was it. The conversation they’d circled, tiptoed around, and deferred for what felt like an eternity.

Alex, ever the thoughtful one, broke the silence first. His voice was a low rumble, laced with a weariness that mirrored Lola’s own. "So," he began, his eyes meeting hers, a silent question in their depths. "We're here. To… talk."

Ben, usually so quick to fill any void in conversation, simply nodded, a faint, almost imperceptible tension around his jaw. His usual effervescence seemed muted, replaced by a quiet contemplation. "Yeah. Talk. About… everything."
