The air in the old study hung thick and still, heavy with the scent of aged paper and a silence that pressed down like a physical weight. Clare’s father, a man usually as steady and unruffled as a summer lake, looked as though he’d been caught in a sudden storm. His hands, usually so adept at mending anything from a leaky faucet to a torn kite, trembled slightly as he gripped the worn arms of his armchair. Clare watched him, a knot of unease tightening in her stomach. She’d come in to ask about dinner, a mundane request that now felt impossibly frivolous.

“Dad? Is everything alright?” she asked, her voice barely a whisper.

He took a slow, shuddering breath, his gaze fixed on a point somewhere beyond her shoulder, as if unwilling to meet her eyes. “Clare,” he began, his voice raspy, “there are things… things about our family. Things I’ve tried to keep from you.”
