Clare accidentally overhears a hushed, intense conversation between Liam and Silas. Snippets about 'the plan' and 'her family's debt' send a chill down her spine.
The late afternoon sun, usually a warm invitation, felt like a spotlight, exposing Clare to an uncomfortable glare as she navigated the polished marble floors of the Vance mansion. She’d been sent to fetch a book for Liam, a rare edition he claimed would illuminate some obscure historical point for his studies. Now, the heavy oak door to Silas Vance’s study stood ajar, a sliver of dark wood revealing a sliver of a world she wasn’t meant to see. A hushed, urgent murmur seeped from within, an undertone of tension that prickled her skin.
Clare paused, her hand hovering near the doorframe. She knew she shouldn’t. Every instinct screamed at her to retreat, to pretend she hadn’t heard, to deliver the book and vanish. But a morbid curiosity, a serpent’s whisper in her ear, held her captive. She pressed her ear closer, the cool marble pressing against her cheek.
Liam’s voice, usually smooth and laced with a playful charm, was tight, strained. “Father, this is becoming…complicated. She’s not what we anticipated.”
