The afternoon sun, usually a warm embrace on Clare’s skin, felt brittle today, casting sharp, unforgiving shadows across the manicured lawns of the Vance estate. She sat on the stone bench by the rose garden, a book open in her lap, though its words blurred into an meaningless jumble.
