“Clare,” he’d greeted her, his voice a low, resonant rumble, devoid of warmth. He’d offered a hand, and his grip was firm, almost possessive, making her skin prickle. Liam had been absent, a strange emptiness in the air that Clare found herself missing more than she cared to admit. He’d excused himself, a vague mention of an urgent call, leaving Clare alone with his father.
