The sterile white walls of the safe house felt like a cage after the chaos they had endured. Sunlight, once a symbol of freedom, now seemed harsh, unforgiving, exposing the raw edges of their ordeal. Clare traced the faint scar on her palm, a physical reminder of the knife’s kiss, a whisper of the terror that had held her captive. Liam sat across from her, his usual easy confidence replaced by a quiet tension that radiated from him like heat. He hadn't slept, his eyes shadowed, the sharp angles of his face softened by exhaustion.

“They’re gone, aren’t they?” Clare’s voice was a fragile thread, testing the silence. “Silas. And his men.”

Liam nodded, his gaze fixed on a point somewhere beyond the window. “My father… he’s disappeared. The network is fractured. Most of his key operatives have been apprehended or scattered. The authorities are… dealing with the aftermath.” He paused, then finally met her eyes, a flicker of something unreadable in their depths. “He won’t be back. Not in any way that can touch us.”
