Chapter 16
Clare's Resilience
Held captive, Clare refuses to break. She uses her intelligence to observe her surroundings and subtly gather information, looking for any opportunity to escape.
The rough burlap sack scraped against Clare’s cheek, a constant, irritating reminder of her predicament. Darkness pressed in, thick and suffocating, punctuated only by the muffled sounds of her own breathing and the unsettling rhythm of the vehicle carrying her away from everything she knew. Fear, a cold serpent, coiled in her stomach, but beneath it, a flicker of something else began to stir – a stubborn ember of defiance. She wouldn't break. Not now. Not ever.
She tested the ropes binding her wrists. They were tight, expertly tied, but not impossible. Her fingers, nimble and accustomed to intricate knot-tying from her brief foray into sailing lessons, worked tirelessly against the rough fibers. Every tiny shift, every infinitesimal fraying, was a victory. The vehicle jolted, throwing her against the side. She gritted her teeth, using the jolt to her advantage, a sudden surge of movement that might have loosened the knot just a fraction.
Hours crawled by. The sun, she guessed, had long since set. The air grew colder, carrying the faint scent of pine and damp earth. They were moving away from the city, away from the familiar glow of streetlights, deeper into a wilder, untamed landscape. Clare strained her ears, trying to decipher any clues from the sounds. The engine’s hum was steady, a deep thrum that suggested a powerful machine. There were no other voices, no discernible speech, only the occasional grunt or sigh from her unseen captors. She imagined them, grim-faced men, their eyes hard and unforgiving, loyal to Silas Vance and his inscrutable agenda.
