The air in the abandoned industrial district hung thick and heavy, a miasma of rust and decay that clung to Liam’s lungs. Moonlight, fractured by broken panes of glass and skeletal fire escapes, painted a chiaroscuro of shadows across the cracked asphalt. This was it. His father’s sanctuary. A place whispered about in hushed tones, a ghost in the city’s underbelly, a labyrinth built from concrete and secrets. Liam pulled the collar of his jacket tighter, the worn leather a familiar comfort against the gnawing unease in his gut. Dust motes danced in the sparse beams of his tactical flashlight, illuminating stacks of forgotten machinery, shrouded in tarpaulins like sleeping giants. The silence here was different from the city’s hum; it was a charged, expectant silence, pregnant with unseen eyes and listening ears. Liam’s senses were on high alert, each creak of his boots, each shallow breath, a potential betrayal.
