The sterile air of the Vance mansion did nothing to cool the inferno raging within Liam. Each breath felt like swallowing shards of glass, the truth of his father’s treachery a burning brand on his soul. Clare. The name echoed in the cavernous silence of his mind, a painful counterpoint to the calculated deception he’d been a part of. He’d played the charming rogue, the indifferent son, the obedient pawn, all while a storm of genuine affection had been brewing beneath the surface, a storm he’d desperately tried to ignore. Now, the tempest had broken, and it was aimed squarely at Silas Vance.
He found his father in the study, a room that always reeked of old money and older secrets. Silas was hunched over a mahogany desk, the dim light glinting off the polished surface, his silhouette a familiar, yet now menacing, shape. He looked up, a flicker of surprise in his cold eyes as Liam stormed in, the door slamming shut behind him with a force that rattled the antique glass.
“Liam,” Silas said, his voice smooth as aged whiskey, but laced with a subtle edge that Liam now recognized as pure venom. “You seem… agitated.”
