The air in the abandoned warehouse crackled with an energy that had nothing to do with the flickering emergency lights. Dust motes danced in the weak beams, illuminated against the oppressive gloom. Clare’s heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic bird trapped in a cage. Liam’s arm was a solid, reassuring weight around her shoulders, but even his presence couldn’t entirely banish the icy tendrils of fear that snaked through her. They were cornered, the echo of approaching footsteps a relentless drumbeat in the cavernous space.

“Who are they, Liam?” she whispered, her voice barely audible above the thumping of her own pulse. She pressed closer, seeking refuge in the warmth of his body, though a part of her knew that warmth was a fragile shield against the storm that was brewing.

Liam’s jaw was tight, his eyes scanning the shadows with an intensity that made her shiver. “Just some people who don’t like us being here,” he replied, his voice a low rumble, carefully devoid of the usual easy charm. This was not the Liam who joked and flirted; this was a man on edge, his carefully constructed facade beginning to fray.
