The air in the cellar was thick, a damp blanket that clung to Elara’s skin like a second, unwanted garment. Dust motes, ancient and forgotten, danced in the slivers of light that dared to pierce the perpetual twilight. It was a world of muted grays and browns, a stark contrast to the vibrant tapestry of her memories. Yet, even in this somber space, a stubborn flicker of her spirit refused to be extinguished. Her eyes, like twin pools reflecting a lost sky, were always seeking, always searching.

Today, the search led her to a small, begrimed window set high in the stone wall. It was more of a slit, really, a jagged opening that offered a meager connection to the outside. Silas, in his quiet way, had secured it with a loose board, as if to remind her of the boundaries of her confinement, yet had not sealed it entirely. Perhaps he had forgotten, or perhaps, in some hidden corner of his heart, he believed she needed some small mercy.

Elara, with the agility born of countless hours spent climbing trees and scrambling over moss-covered rocks, had managed to dislodge a corner of the board. It was a precarious task, her small hands scraping against the rough wood, her breath held tight in her chest. But the reward, when it came, was a revelation.
