Chapter 4
A Determined Defiance
Kam Kam, unconvinced by the elders' fear, believes the woods hold the cure. Her resolve hardens; she will venture where others fear to tread, for the sake of her home.
The scent of dust and despair hung heavy over the village, a tangible thing that clung to Kam Kam’s small shoulders like a shroud. Elder Maeve’s pronouncements echoed in the marketplace, each word a pronouncement of doom, a thunderclap of fear that rattled the very foundations of their homes. “A curse!” she had declared, her voice raspy with age and conviction, her eyes, like chips of flint, scanning the faces of her people. “The Whispering Woods have sent their blight upon us, and only by appeasing their dark spirits can we hope for salvation.”
Kam Kam listened, her heart a tight knot in her chest. She saw the fear bloom in the eyes of her neighbors, the way they clutched their children tighter, their gazes darting towards the dense, shadowed line of trees that marked the edge of their world. The woods were not a place of malice; they were a place of mystery, of life, of secrets waiting to be uncovered.
Later, as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of bruised purple and fiery orange, Kam Kam sat by the dying embers of her family’s hearth. Her mother, her face etched with worry lines deeper than usual, stirred a thin gruel. “You heard Elder Maeve, child,” she said softly, her voice devoid of its usual warmth. “The woods are not for us. They are a place of shadow and danger.”
