Chapter 16
A Pact of Friendship
Kam Kam shares her food and stories with the beast. It responds with a rumbling purr, a sign of trust. Together, they approach the glowing flower.
Kam Kam sat cross-legged on the mossy earth, the fallen leaves cushioning her small frame. Before her, the Beast of the Whispering Woods, a creature of shadow and moss, watched with eyes like pools of twilight. The Beast’s massive head lowered, its snout nudging gently against her outstretched hand. A low rumble vibrated through the ground, a sound that had once filled her with terror, but now, somehow, felt like a contented sigh. It took the berries with surprising delicacy, its rough tongue barely brushing her skin. Each berry disappeared into its cavernous maw, and with each swallow, the rumbling grew a little stronger, a little warmer.
