Chapter 14
A Misunderstood Protector
Kam Kam observes the beast. Its ferocity seems born of loneliness, not malice. She sees the sadness in its eyes and understands its role as a guardian, not a monster.
The air in the clearing hummed with an unseen energy, thick and potent as the scent of damp moss after a spring rain. Kam Kam, her heart a rapid drum against her ribs, pressed herself against the rough bark of an ancient oak, its roots like gnarled fingers clutching the earth. Before her, in the heart of the space, pulsed the object of her perilous quest: the Fabled Glowing Flower. Its form was a tapestry of shadow and strength, fur the color of midnight, matted and wild, rippling over muscles coiled with power. Horns, like obsidian branches, curved back from its brow, and its eyes, deep-set and burning with an amber fire, scanned the clearing with an unnerving intensity. A low growl rumbled in its chest, a sound that vibrated through the very soles of Kam Kam’s bare feet, a warning that spoke of ancient, untamed power.
