Chapter 10
The Echoing Caves
Lost in the woods, Kam Kam stumbles upon a network of echoing caves. Strange whispers and shadows play tricks on her ears, testing her courage in the darkness.
The air grew heavy, thick with the scent of damp earth and something else, something ancient and unknown. Kam Kam, her heart thrumming a nervous rhythm against her ribs, pushed aside a curtain of moss that dripped with the day’s lingering dew. Before her yawned a darkness so profound it seemed to swallow the faint sunlight filtering through the canopy. This was it – the entrance to the Echoing Caves, a place spoken of only in hushed, fearful tones by the village elders, a place even the bravest hunters avoided.
She took a deep breath, the cool, subterranean air filling her lungs. It tasted different from the outside world, cleaner, sharper, carrying the faintest hint of mineral and something sweet, like forgotten flowers. Her hand, small but firm, reached for the smooth, cool stone of the cave mouth. The memory of the wilting crops, of the worried faces of her village, spurred her onward. The elders might see this place as a curse, but Kam Kam felt a pull, a whisper of hope that this labyrinth of rock might hold the answer she desperately sought.
Stepping inside was like stepping into another world. The cacophony of the forest—the rustling leaves, the chirping insects, the distant call of birds—vanished, replaced by an unnerving silence. Yet, it wasn't truly silent. As her eyes adjusted to the gloom, she began to discern sounds, faint and elusive, that seemed to emanate from the very stone around her. They were whispers, not of words, but of tones, of sighs, of echoes that seemed to twist and turn, playing tricks on her ears.
