Chapter 16
The Portal Fades
As the sun begins to set on Earth, the shimmering portal on Mars starts to shrink. Zorp and Gleep watch sadly, knowing Brian's adventure might be coming to an end.
The Martian sun, a distant, muted ember in the vast, inky sky, began its slow dip towards the dusty horizon. On the rust-colored plains, where countless alien brains bobbed gently in their transparent jars, a peculiar sight unfolded. Zorp and Gleep, two of Brian’s closest jarred companions, floated nearer to the spot where their friend had vanished. A faint, almost imperceptible shimmer still pulsed in the air, a ghostly echo of the grand, swirling gateway that had whisked Brian away. It was shrinking, they noticed with a pang that felt like a tiny Martian pebble lodged in their cerebral sacs.
“It’s… it’s getting smaller, Gleep,” Zorp’s voice, a series of soft, bubbly clicks, held a note of melancholy. His own jar, a sturdy, round vessel, tilted slightly as he peered at the diminishing spectacle. He’d always been the more cautious one, the brain that considered the potential pitfalls of any grand escapade. Brian’s leap into the unknown had sent ripples of worry through his carefully ordered thoughts.
Gleep, whose jar was more of an elongated, elegant cylinder, emitted a soft, sighing hum. “Yes, Zorp. It’s like a closing eye, isn’t it? A wink from the universe saying, ‘That’s all for now.’” Gleep, ever the optimist, had been Brian’s loudest cheerleader, his enthusiastic bleeps and boops echoing across the Martian surface as Brian tapped his way towards the portal. Now, even Gleep felt the weight of Brian’s impending return, or perhaps, his permanent absence. The thought of Brian being gone forever was a notion too vast and too sad to fully process.
