A Little Bit of Home

Lily finds a shiny red rock, like the ones on Mars. She gives it to Brian. He places it next to his jar. It's a small reminder of his home and his brain friends.

The sun, a distant, hazy ember in the Martian sky, cast long, lazy shadows across the red, dusty plains. Back on Mars, in their usual spots, Zorp and Gleep, along with all the other jarred alien brains, were peering through the shimmering portal, their gelatinous forms jiggling with a mixture of pride and a tiny bit of worry. They could see Brian, their tap-dancing friend, surrounded by a whirlwind of small, colorful humans in a place that looked like a giant, vibrant playground. Brian was doing his thing, his spectator tap shoes a blur of black and white against the strange, soft ground.

On Earth, the playground buzzed with the excited chatter of children. Laughter echoed, swings creaked, and the rhythmic *tap-tap-tappity-tap* of Brian’s shoes was a new, delightful sound that had quickly captured everyone’s attention. Lily, a girl with bright, curious eyes and hair the color of sunshine, had been the first to notice Brian. She’d been building a magnificent sandcastle near the edge of the playground, a castle so grand it might have rivaled any Martian structure, when she’d heard the unusual rhythm. Now, she was sitting cross-legged, her sand-covered hands resting on her knees, watching Brian with absolute fascination. Tom, a boy who seemed to have boundless energy, was bouncing on the balls of his feet, a wide grin plastered across his face.

“He’s so cool!” Tom exclaimed, his voice full of awe. “I’ve never seen anyone dance like that before!”
