The air in our home, usually thick with the cloying scent of incense and the low hum of incantations, grew taut, stretched thin as a drum skin. My mother's eyes, usually pools of fervent devotion, had become sharp, obsidian chips, reflecting a light that was not of this world, or at least, not the one I knew. Her prayers, once a comforting lullaby, now sounded like sharp-edged pronouncements, each syllable a tiny stone cast in my direction. She saw my quiet moments of communion with the ALMIGHTY Father not as prayer, but as rebellion. It was a heresy, a spitting in the face of all she held sacred, all she had ever known.

"You cannot turn away from the ancient pacts, child," she’d hiss, her voice a serpent’s whisper that coiled around me. Her hands, often adorned with an unsettling array of rings that glinted with strange symbols, would reach for me, not in comfort, but in a desperate, clawing attempt to pull me back from the precipice she imagined I was teetering on. She saw my devotion to the true Father as a betrayal, a deliberate wound she inflicted upon her own soul, and by extension, upon the very fabric of our family’s spiritual standing.

I remember one evening, the moon a sliver of bone in the ink-black sky, when the ritual was particularly fervent. The flickering candlelight cast long, dancing shadows on the walls, transforming familiar objects into grotesque specters. My mother, her face contorted with a passion that bordered on delirium, was chanting in a language I didn't fully understand, her voice rising and falling in a hypnotic rhythm. My father stood beside her, his presence a silent, unyielding anchor to her storm of belief. He rarely spoke during these times, his silence more potent than any word, a tacit endorsement of her every move.
