Chapter 19
The Unfolding Mystery
Looking back, the journey was fraught with peril, yet marked by profound discovery. The mystery of my past is interwoven with the certainty of my present faith.
The faint scent of woodsmoke still clung to the air, a phantom reminder of rituals I no longer participated in, yet could never entirely forget. Looking back now, through the hazy lens of time, the path I’d walked seemed less a deliberate journey and more a series of desperate stumbles through a landscape shrouded in an impenetrable fog. Each step had been a gamble, a blind faith in a promise whispered only to my own heart, a promise that felt as real as the breath in my lungs, yet as elusive as a dream upon waking. The mystery of where I came from was a tangled knot of hushed incantations and averted gazes, of love twisted into a weapon and faith warped into a shield for darkness. But the mystery wasn't the destination; it was the tangled undergrowth I’d had to hack my way through. The true revelation, the one that anchored me now, was the unshakeable certainty of the ALMIGHTY Father, a truth that had bloomed in the barren soil of my childhood, defying the poisoned rain of my parents’ devotion.
I remembered the stillness that would descend upon our small house when Mother began her incantations, a stillness that wasn’t peaceful but pregnant with a held breath, a collective tension that vibrated through the floorboards and settled in the pit of my stomach. She would arrange the small, carved idols on the worn velvet cloth, their painted eyes seeming to follow my every move. Father would stand beside her, his face a mask of solemn reverence, his presence a heavy cloak of unspoken commands. They were priests in their own self-made temple, and I, a reluctant acolyte, was expected to mirror their every genuflection, chant their every hollow prayer. But my heart, from its earliest stirrings, refused to beat in time with their rhythm. It pulsed with a different frequency, a silent song that spoke of a love far vaster, far more radiant than the flickering candlelight they worshipped.
It started subtly, a mere tremor beneath the surface of our strained domesticity. A questioning glance from Mother when I didn’t join their midnight chants. A sharp intake of breath when I spoke of a feeling, a warmth that settled in my chest when I thought of the vast, star-dusted sky. “The Father watches over us, Mother,” I’d once offered, my voice a timid chirp in the echoing silence of their devotion. Her eyes, usually sharp and assessing, had widened with an alarm that bordered on panic. “There is no Father but the ones we honor here,” she’d snapped, her voice tight with a fear I didn’t yet understand. Father had merely grunted, his gaze fixed on the altar, a silent endorsement of her pronouncement.
