Chapter 16
The Weight of Belonging
The community's judgment felt like a tangible force. Their whispers, amplified by my parents, sought to isolate me, to make me doubt my own reality.
The air in the village square hung thick with an unspoken judgment, a palpable weight that pressed down on my chest. It wasn't just the usual village gossip, the kind that floated on the breeze like dandelion seeds; this felt more deliberate, more insidious. It was the cumulative effect of my parents' whispers, their carefully curated tales spun about me, their own daughter, to this community of watchful eyes and knowing smiles. They had painted me as something other, something strange, a deviation from their sacred norm, and now I felt the chilling embrace of their creation.
Each sideways glance felt like a prod, each hushed conversation that ceased abruptly as I passed was a tiny, sharp shard of glass embedding itself beneath my skin. The women, their faces etched with a mixture of pity and something akin to morbid fascination, would clutch their shawls tighter, their eyes darting away as if fearing contagion. The men, their gazes lingering a moment too long, carried a different kind of weight, a silent assessment that made me feel like an specimen under a magnifying glass. They were the witches, as my mother often referred to them in hushed, fearful tones, though to me, they were simply the village folk, caught in the same web of rituals and beliefs that ensnared my parents. But now, my parents had turned their carefully cultivated fear and suspicion onto me, using this very community as a stage for my supposed unraveling.
"She's different, you see," my mother would confide, her voice a low, conspiratorial hum, laced with a feigned concern that masked a deeper, more sinister pleasure. "There's a… a shadow about her. The ALMIGHTY Father, they call it. A dangerous path, a path of ruin." She would then turn to me, her eyes wide with a manufactured terror. "Don't you listen to those whispers, child. They will lead you astray. They will steal your soul."
