The air in our small house, once thick with the scent of incense and hushed prayers, began to crackle with a different kind of energy. It was the sharp, metallic tang of fear, the acrid smoke of suspicion. My parents' hushed conversations, once a comforting hum of shared devotion, had devolved into sharp, clipped exchanges, their voices laced with a tension that vibrated through the very floorboards. The subtle pressures, the sideways glances, the pointed silences that had long been my companions, were no longer enough. They wanted more. They wanted a confession, a renunciation, a surrender.

"This is not a game," he’d tell me, his gaze like a branding iron. "There are consequences for disrespect. You are jeopardizing not just yourself, but all of us." The weight of his words pressed down, a tangible burden on my young shoulders. He spoke of loyalty, of blood, of the sacred pacts they believed bound our family to their gods. But I felt no such binding, only the growing urge to break free.
