Chapter 10
The Father's Shadow
My father, a man of stern pronouncements, backed my mother's crusade. His silence was a heavy weight, his disapproval a constant reminder of the fractured bond.
The air in our home had always been thick with incense, a cloying perfume that clung to the velvet drapes and seeped into the very marrow of the walls. But after the pronouncements, after the whispers had solidified into accusations, a new scent had begun to permeate the stillness: the metallic tang of fear, laced with the bitter smoke of my mother’s escalating fury. And then there was him. My father. A man carved from granite and silence, his presence a vast, immovable shadow that stretched across our lives, encompassing everything and offering little warmth.
He was not a man of many words, my father. His pronouncements, when they came, were like pronouncements from some ancient, unyielding oracle, delivered with a voice that rumbled in his chest and echoed in the cavernous spaces of our living room. He was the bedrock of their faith, the silent pillar that supported my mother’s fervent, often frantic, rituals. While she danced and chanted, her eyes wild with a devotion I could not comprehend, he would sit in his worn armchair, a study in impassive observation. He did not participate in the frenzied rituals, not with his limbs or his voice, but his mind was there, a silent participant in the unfolding drama. His stillness was not one of peace, but of a coiled, potent watchfulness.
I remember one evening, the wind outside howling like a hungry wolf, rattling the windowpanes as if desperate to get in. My mother was in the throes of one of her ceremonies, a collection of herbs and strange effigies spread across the polished oak table. The candlelight flickered, casting grotesque, dancing shadows that contorted the familiar objects of our home into monstrous shapes. I sat on the worn rug, my knees pulled to my chest, trying to find a sliver of the ALMIGHTY father’s peace in the midst of the storm. My mother’s voice rose and fell, a guttural chant that scraped against my nerves.
