It clung to the corners of his office, seeped from the hushed conversations in the general store, and most perplexingly, emanated from the small, neat cottage on Elm Street where the Miller family resided.

He’d been over the Miller’s recent good fortune a dozen times in his mind, each iteration leading him back to the same bewildering dead end. The sudden appearance of a plump sack of flour on their doorstep when their pantry was bare. The mended roof that had been leaking for months, repaired with shingles no one in town had seen before. And then there was young Thomas’s prized wooden soldier, its painted uniform chipped and faded, returned one morning with a gleaming, perfectly restored finish, tucked beside his pillow. No note, no witness, just… a solution.
