The air in Liam’s inherited attic was thick with the scent of aged paper and forgotten dreams. Dust motes danced like spectral performers in the single shaft of sunlight that pierced the gloom, illuminating the tattered pages of his grandfather’s journal. He traced the spidery script, each word a fragile whisper from a life he’d barely known. Beside him, Elara Vance, the town’s resident historian, ran a gloved finger over a faded photograph tucked between the journal’s leaves. Marcus Thorne, his quiet presence a steady anchor, studied a brittle, hand-drawn map spread across a dust-shrouded trunk.

“It’s… it’s more than just a society,” Liam murmured, his voice hoarse with discovery. “They called themselves the ‘Guardians of the Unseen.’ They were actively fighting something. Something they called ‘The Blight.’”

Elara hummed, her brow furrowed. “The Blight. I’ve never encountered that term in any local records. Not directly, anyway. There are… allusions. Vague mentions of a ‘dark period,’ a time when people ‘lost themselves.’ But nothing concrete.” She tapped the photograph. “This looks like the old town square, doesn’t it? But the buildings are different. Older. And the people… they look so drawn. So… hollowed.”
